Guidelines for Storytellers
All stories must be true.
We can't fact-check (and wouldn't if we could), so we trust you won't fabricate anything!Stories can be on any theme.
Stories may be uplifting, poignant, uproariously funny, toe-curlingly embarrassing, happy, sad, and anything in between.Truth Be Told is not stand-up comedy.
Many stories, even the most devastating, have comic elements – and some are flat-out hilarious. However, there is no expectation on performers to be funny. The show’s emphasis is on telling honest, interesting stories with a narrative arc.Stories should be 7-12 mins long.
You'll be surprised how long a story can take to tell, so it's best to time your story before the show to check it won't run over.We encourage you to perform without notes.
It's easier to connect with the audience if you’re not referring to flashcards. However, notes are not prohibited!Practise your story.
Think about its structure, how it will progress from one moment to the next. It can be a good idea to write your story down to help memorise it. Rehearsing your story is the best way to do it justice!Stories may be profane or scandalous, but please don’t rely on swearing for shock value.
Stories with discriminatory language or prejudicial sentiments are not tolerated. Please let us know ahead of the show if your story may contain triggering or upsetting content.
